December 8, 2011 - BC Honors WWII Veterans and George K. Gannam '38 It is a solemn, annual tradition that has additional meaning this year. Each year, on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, the Benedictine Cadets have honored those who fought in WWII, including BC Alumnus SSG George K. Gannam, the first Savannahian killed at Pearl Harbor. This year, the 70th anniversary of WWII, BC unveiled a new WWII Memorial at 9:20AM at the school’s 6502 Seawright Drive campus.

Cadets assembled in Brigade formation on the BC quad, facing the new WWII Memorial as a tribute to the 30 BC alumni who gave their lives in WWII. The memorial ceremony included the reading of the plaque’s inscription and calling out the name of each of the Cadets who died during the war. A bell was rung after each name was called. Veteran’s Council and Veteran of the Year Joseph L. Conners (BC ’49) laid a wreath at the foot of the WWII Memorial pedestal.

After Taps was played, the Brigade reassembled on the parade field for Gannam Day Review. The Gannam Day Review honors the first Savannahian killed at Pearl Harbor, SSG Gannam (BC ’38) and is a tribute to all military service members who gave their lives in service to our country. SSG Gannam was cut down by strafing fire as he raced to protect the aircraft in the hangars at Hickham Field (source: American Legion Post 184). This event was conducted by BC’s Corps of Cadets and hosted by American Legion Post 184.

Two awards and a presentation took place as part of the Gannam Day Ceremony. BC and the American Legion  recognized two BC Cadets, one with the God and Country Medal and the other with the George K. Gannam Memorial Medal. A presentation of an American Flag to the Gannam family occurred during the ceremony. The Gannam's then presented the flag to Dr. Deborah Antosca, BC principal, for daily use at the school.

December 7, 2011 - Annual Canned Food Drive a SUCCESS! The Cadets at Benedictine Military School (BC) have been doing their part to help feed the hungry and on Tuesday, December 6, at 2:00PM, they assisted America’s Second Harvest Food Bank as they began loading more than five thousand cans of food.  Later that afternoon the Cadets presented a check for the purchase of an additional 34,000 cans of food.

All of the Cadets’ work will enable Second Harvest to have nearly 40,000 cans of food to help feed those in need.  The Cadets had several efforts to help garner such a donation, including a food drive collection at school.  In addition, they had special events such as free dress days and a dance to help raise money to buy additional food.

Helping Second Harvest is an annual tradition at BC.  The Cadets also help a number of other community organizations throughout the year in order to help those in need as well as to give back to the community.

November 22, 2011 - BC Hires Kevin Farmer '92 to Coach 2012

Dear Members of the BC Family:

I am pleased to announce that BC alumnus ('92) and current Calvary Day School Teacher Kevin Farmer will join Benedictine Military School (BC) as a staff member and head baseball coach effective July 1, 2012. We had a vacancy in the coaching position for baseball after Bill Curley announced that the 2011-2012 school year would be his last to serve as head baseball coach. Bill has coached in the BC baseball program for 18 years and also serves as head cross country coach. He has been teaching at BC since 1994 in the English department.

Kevin will assume responsibility for the Cadets baseball team as they prepare for the 2013 season. Until then, he will continue to work the rest of the 2011-2012 school year at Calvary, where he teaches psychology, medical science and technology, and personal finance. Last spring he stepped down as Calvary's head baseball coach in order to pursue a Masters degree in Counseling Education at Georgia Southern University.

As baseball coach at Calvary Kevin had an overall career win-loss record of 241-70-1 and led the team to two state titles and seven region championships. In 2011 the Savannah Morning News named him baseball coach of the year and in previous years he has also been honored as coach of the year for the Georgia Dugout Club and GACA Region 3A.

His previous work experience includes working at Richmond Hill High School where he also served as assistant baseball coach. Prior to that he was a teacher and coach at Bryan County High School and Richmond Hill Elementary School. He began his teaching career at the Athens/Clarke County Board of Education after receiving his B.A. degree in Psychology from the University of Georgia.

Please join me in welcoming Kevin and in thanking Bill Curley for his service as the Cadets' baseball coach.

Best Regards,

Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B.

Headmaster
